It was several hours before Simeon woke up. He opened drowsy eyes and turned his head. It was dark, and Addy sat in the chair with her eyes closed.
âAddy,â his raspy voice made her snap her head up. She leaped up from the chair and reached for the hand heâd pried loose from the covers.
âHey, youâre awake; thank the Lord.â
âThank the Lord,â he echoed and grimaced. His head pounded.
âHow do you feel?â She gently touched his forehead, relieved to feel it was much warmer than it had been.
âHeadache, very hot,â he managed.
âLetâs get one of these layers off you; then Iâll call the doctor for some pain relief.â
He gave her a trusting smile that made her heart lurch. She whipped off the top blanket and loosened the tightness of the under blankets, freeing his head from the towel.
She touched his cheek gently. Her eyes softened, and she smiled kindly at him. âIâll just get the doctor.â
She hurried up the stairs to knock on the doctor's bedroom door. After some time, she heard the shuffling footsteps, and he opened the door, pulling up his suspenders as he stepped out. âIs he awake?â
âYeah. He says he has a headache and is overly hot.â
âThatâs to be expected. Iâll be right there.â
She hurried down the stairs while the doctor dressed and washed up.
The doctor soon arrived and hurried to Simeonâs bedside. âMr. Stone, how are you feeling?â
âHot, headache, pins and needles.â
The doctor gave him a reassuring smile. âThatâs to be expected when you insist on swimming in frozen lakes.â
Addy gulped and bit her lip, regret forming in her eyes.
Simeon caught it and gave her a reassuring smile.
The doctor administered pain relief, checked the man over, and removed another blanket. âHeâs going to be fine. When his headache has subsided, and the pins and needles die down, you can help him home.â
âThank you, Doctor.â Addy gripped Simeonâs hand.
âThank you, Doctor.â Simeon gave him a grateful smile.
Doctor Lightfoot nodded and hurried back up the stairs.
âTry to sleep, Sim; Iâll be right here.â
âYou⦠donât have to stay⦠Iâll be okay.â
She squeezed his hand and bent over to kiss his forehead. âOf course, Iâm going to stay.â
He smiled as he noticed her hazel eyes sparkle in the low lamplight. It was the first time heâd noticed the colors in her eyes. âThank you.â He squeezed her hand.
âYouâre most welcome. Iâm sorry I made you go out there.â Addyâs face screwed up in contrition.
He lifted his other hand to stop her. âAddy, itâs fine; I had fun until I hit the thin ice.â He grimaced.
Addy furrowed her brows and gave him an apologetic smile. âIâm sorry.â
âDonât be.â He smiled.
